When I first started using Meta ads, reaching large numbers of people made me think I was doing a great job.

Big numbers easily swayed me, but when my marketing budget ran out, I had ZERO conversions and realised that selling to everybody just doesn’t work.

Unless of course, you have a couple million to throw at brand recognition ads the way big companies do.

Instead, we need to rely on a different approach. So let’s answer this basic question first:

Why Do People Buy Anything?

There are two main reasons:

1) They’re either running towards a desire

2) Or they’re running away from pain

So how do we use this?

Get to know your target audience.

I know, I know, there’s more than one audience you can target, and I assume we’re being reasonable here and not talking about the entire world.

But instead of testing them all to see which will give you the best results, narrow it down and save your ad budget by doing some research first. Because it’s way easier to sell to someone already interested in your product.

Sales legend, Jeffrey Gitomer once said:

“People hate to be sold to… but they love to buy!”

If you put an appealing offer in front of someone interested in your product, without sounding salesy and desperate for their money - the chances that they’ll buy are way higher.

So How Do You Do Effective Research?

Unless you’re selling something completely new to mankind, you’re naturally going to have some sort of competition.

Over time, the word “competition” got a bad rap. But you can use competition to improve your business enormously.

Here’s how to use competition for the greater good:

Go on competitor websites, find reviews, see what kinds of people are interested in their products and services. Get to know how they talk and what words they use.

Are they students, retired, or couples etc?

After seeing the ad you tailored specifically for them, your goal is to make them think:

“Hey, they’re talking to me! This guy gets me!”

Feeling understood builds rapport instantly and increases the chances that your customer will buy from you again, and again, and again.

We all have brands we go to time after time right?

The world is divided by big brand rivalries:

Coke vs Pepsi

Apple vs Samsung

Ferrari vs Lamborghini

McDonald's vs KFC

The fact that these guys love to compete for customers is proof that they know there’s money to be made in each market…
